Shingle Roof

When you are replacing your roof or building a home you need to determine which type of roof material you want to use.  There are many different roof material types and each has their own advantages and disadvantages depending on budget, climate, type of home, etc.  Two common roof types are shingle roofs and tile roofs.  Often, a homeowner will debate whether or not they want a shingle roof or tile roof and need to weigh the two options’ pros and cons when making a decision for their home.  Roofing tile is typically either made of clay or concrete and roofing shingles are usually made of asphalt and are sometimes referred to as composition shingles.

Between the two options, shingle roofs are the less expensive option.  If budget is one of the major factors in your decision and you simply do not have any wiggle room on the budget, the budget may determine that you will be using shingle roofing. That is not to say that shingle roofing is the less desirable option but simply that it is usually the less expensive option.  But, if there is budgetary flexibility and ultimate ROI on your investment is an important factor, you may lean towards tile roofing.  While tile roofing is more expensive up front, it will last much longer and thus may save you money in the long run.

One of the other most important factors in your roofing material decision will be the climate in which you live.  If you live in a climate that does not experience major weather swings, strong storms, snow, etc., a shingle roof will work perfectly well.  However, if durability in extreme weather is a concern, tile roofing is more durable and can better withstand harsher weather conditions.  But, modern shingles have come a long way and are still very durable.

If color is a concern with your roofing material, you are more limited in color choices with roof tiles than with roof shingles.  Roof tiles are typically earth tones or lighter in color while roof shingles are available in a variety of styles and colors.  One final consideration when choosing between shingle roofing and tile roofing is weight.  It is important to consult an experienced roofer who can evaluate your home’s roof and ensure that it can withstand the weight of roof tile.  Roof tile is significantly more heavy than roof shingles so if weight is a concern, roof shingles may be the ideal choice.  Consult an experienced and reliable roofing company to evaluate your roof and help you determine whether shingle roofing or tile roofing is best for you.
